Why malaria vaccines are one part of Africa’s prevention effort

Malaria vaccines have added an important tool to prevention efforts in Africa, but the World Health Organization places them within a wider package of protection.

A combined prevention approach

WHO recommended broad use of the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine in 2021 for children in areas with moderate to high transmission of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. It recommended a second vaccine, R21/Matrix-M, in 2023.

The organisation says the greatest benefit comes when vaccination is combined with other recommended measures, including insecticide-treated bed nets and appropriate preventive medicines. Diagnosis and treatment remain essential.

What families should check

This means that reporting a vaccine introduction should go beyond the launch ceremony. Useful questions include which areas are covered, how families are informed, whether scheduled doses can be completed and how vaccination connects with existing prevention services.

Availability and eligibility depend on national programmes. Readers should check local health-service guidance rather than assume that every clinic provides the same vaccine schedule. The wider lesson is that a new intervention strengthens a prevention system; it does not remove the need for the other parts of that system.
